Episode 42: Mister Enthusiast/Phillip Toledano on ‘Ruining’ his Tudor, vintage Rolex and being a Bastardo!
Phillip Toledano (AKA Mister Enthusiast) is an eccentric oddball of a human. He’s also a font of creativity, which perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising given that he’s an artist and photographer. His subjects are as diverse as the economic collapse of American business, and United States Navy pilot’s helmets, pictures that manage to tell a story more extraordinary than just what’s in the image. This critical eye is applied to watches too — another gem of Toledano advice is “Don’t look in the same direction as everyone else”, which is why he favours ugly quartz Pateks over the coveted Nautilus. In fact, Toledano seems to take joy in ugly-yet-purposeful objects, like his internet-famous Lancia Delta Integrale, which earned the nickname Bastarda, and eventually became the Viva Bastardo brand.

In the world of watches, George Bamford — and his eponymous company — Bamford Watch Department, needs no introduction. Bamford has been extolling the virtues of customisation as a hallmark of luxury since 2006 and was well ahead of the curve. But back then, taking a perfectly good watch and giving it a black coat of paint and a new dial was less accepted than it is today. We talk about his rise to success, the importance of creative partnerships, and the first watch he ever took apart — a Breitling Navitimer he was gifted in 1996.

Neil Ferrier is Discommon’s chief conspirator. A Scottish mechanical engineer who ended up founding and running an agile industrial design agency with a fascinating client list and output. He’s made straight razors for Deadpool, crazy tables for anonymous clients and everything in between. If you’ve ever wondered just what it takes to turn an idea into something concrete, this is a must-listen. We also chat about why he thinks watchmakers need to enlist the help of industrial designers (spoiler, he thinks most watch cases are basic).

Guess who's back, back again. Jenni Elle's back, and she's got spend. In case you missed episode 32, Jenni Elle is a popular YouTuber who's cut a swathe with her down-to-earth style of watch reviewing. She's also got a little bit of a problem -- she's looking for a rectangular dress watch for around 4000 Euro, and we've decided to help her out. Andy comes up with a field of safe, respectable (and fairly fiscally restrained) choices, while Felix goes a little nuts and embraces some truly odd watches. On top of that we get Jenni Elle's take on the new Rolex releases, and the hype surrounding them. Plus, Felix complains about Sepultura t-shirts (because of course)
